Standing tall amidst the beautiful hills of Kodaikanal, the Doordarshan TV Tower is one of the most iconic technological landmarks in the region. Surrounded by misty mountains, pine forests, and cool weather, the tower has been an important part of broadcasting and communication services in the hill station for decades.
The tower is located on the route between the famous Coaker's Walk and La Saleth Church, making it a familiar structure for both tourists and local residents visiting that area of Kodaikanal.
The Doordarshan transmission center in Kodaikanal was established to improve television broadcasting across the hill regions and nearby districts. According to Prasar Bharati records, a High Power Transmitter with 10 KW capacity was commissioned at the Kodaikanal hilltop on 14 January 1987 to relay television programs to far-reaching mountainous areas.
The main purpose of the tower is television signal transmission. Before cable TV, satellite television, and internet streaming became common, towers like this played a massive role in connecting remote communities with news, education, entertainment, sports, and government information.
Through this tower, channels from Doordarshan such as DD National, DD News, DD Sports, and the Tamil regional channel DD Podhigai were broadcast to surrounding regions. The Kodaikanal station helped deliver television coverage to many rural and hilly areas where signal access was otherwise difficult.
The tower is built at one of the highest points in Kodaikanal, which itself is located around 2,225 meters (7,300 feet) above sea level in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu. Because of this high-altitude location, the signals from the tower can travel across large distances with minimal obstruction.
The exact official dimensions of the Kodaikanal Doordarshan Tower are not publicly documented online, but the structure is considered a high-power terrestrial broadcasting tower designed for long-range television transmission. Like many Doordarshan transmission towers in India, it was specially engineered with a strong lattice-steel structure capable of supporting multiple broadcast antennas and transmission equipment.
Apart from its technical importance, the tower has also become part of Kodaikanal’s identity. Visible from several viewpoints across the town, the structure creates a striking contrast against the clouds and forests of the hill station. For many visitors traveling from Coaker’s Walk towards La Saleth Church, the tower remains one of the most recognizable man-made landmarks in Kodaikanal.
Even today, in the era of digital media and streaming platforms, the Doordarshan TV Tower stands as a symbol of India’s broadcasting history — representing the period when terrestrial television connected remote hill communities to the rest of the country through a single powerful transmission tower.
